Shopping for Native Plants

How to Shop for Native Plants (PDF, ~84 KB).

We have a Shopper's Protest Card you can view and download and take with you when you go plant shopping. You can give these to the nursery growers to help to enourage them to grow the native plants you want to find, or to inform them that certain plants are invasive.

We also have a list of Native Plant Sources, which lists nurseries that state that they sell native plants. They may have sales that we do not advertise.

State and Local Giveaways and Reimbursements

The State of Maryland encourages landowners to convert a portion of their property to wildlife habitat and manage invasive species on their properties. Financial incentives may be given to landowners with properties adjacent to sensitive areas. For more information, check out The Maryland Landowner Incentive Program (LIP).

Spring and Fall, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, through its TREE-MENDOUS Marylandprogram, offers native trees and shrubs for planting on public lands.

Carroll County

The Carroll County Forestry Board's Backyard Buffers program has FREE trees for property owners living in Carroll County. The property needs to be adjacent to a stream or other waterway. For more information, see the web site at http://ccfb.gardentotable.net/.

Montgomery County

The City of Gaithersburg's Rainscapes Rewards Program and The City of Rockville's Rainscapes Rewards Program can reimburse landowners for installing rain barrels and planting trees. Those who live outside of Rockville or Gaithersburg in Montgomery County can participate in Montgomery County's RainScapes Rewards Rebates Program.
