Lists of Native Species to Plant

Calvert County Native Plants: Recommended Trees and Shrubs (PDF, ~1.8MB). This guide is intended to aid home owners and Calvert County officials in selecting native plants for Critical Area buffer planting and management, habitat restoration and natural landscaping to enhance the health and beauty of the Chesapeake Bay. All of these plants are native to Maryland and naturally occur in the Coastal Plain region, which encompasses Calvert County. Each section lists plants in alphabetical order by their common names, and includes the scientific name, plant characteristics, and growth conditions for each plant. A list of nurseries that stock or can obtain native plants is included as a resource.

Native Plants For Central Maryland Landscapes (piedmont and inner coastal plain). This is a commented list compiled by MNPS member Louisa Thompson. It is specifically for central Maryland and contains most of the common, reasonably ornamental, trees, shrubs, and flowering plants, plus some uncommon but especially beautiful ones, and a few that have special wildlife value.

Native Plants for Wildlife Habitat and Conservation Landscaping, from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and available for sale from MNPS.

Native Plants For Wildlife Habitat And Conservation Landscaping In Maryland. From the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Chesapeake Bay Field Office. These three lists specifically address the different habitats in the three sections of our state. There is a general section in each list that covers such topics as "designing a habitat". The light, moisture, and soil requirements are outlined for each species. The plant information for these lists was compiled by MNPS member Carol Jelich.
