    Saturday, April 20, 2019 - 9 AM-12 noon

Sponsoring Organization: Maryland Native Plant Society

Description: The goal of this hike is to explore the plants growing along the Jones Falls Trail, including Round Falls and Druid Hill Park. We'll use bikes to travel between locations. We'll also be using iNaturalist to record the plants we find (this is optional).

    Leader:  Brett McMillan

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Limited to 10 people. Not limited to MNPS members.

Notes: This will be a relatively slow roll, not a fitness ride, but the trail will be uphill for most of the trip, much of it on a gentle slope. There is a steep switchback trail to get from Falls Road up to Wyman Park Drive at Druid Hill Park that we will likely walk up.

Bring:   A working bicycle and associated supplies, like a spare tube. A pannier or backpack to carry your stuff. Please bring your favorite guidebook(s) as well. I plan to record our trip list using the iNaturalist app. I encourage others to use the app as well.

    • 04/20/2019
    • 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
    • Watkins Regional Park, 301 Watkins Park Drive, Upper Marlboro, MD

    Saturday, April 20, 2019 10 AM to 2 PM

Sponsoring Organization: Maryland Native Plant Society

Due to positive feedback from our previous spring nature hikes at Watkins, the Cheverly Green Infrastructure Science Committee, in cooperation with the Maryland Native Plant Society, is offering its eighth annual wildflower and nature walk. This is a great chance to come out, enjoy the spring, learn about seasonal flowers at their peak, observe birds, wildlife and meet interesting people.

We may expect to find hepatica, crane-fly, showy, and putty orchids, saxifrage, red trillium or wakerobin, as well as most of the more common species of spring ephemerals, such as spring beauties, trout lilies, dutchman’s breeches, toothworts and May apples. Pawpaws may be in bloom, and along the creek, we will see bluebells and skunk cabbage. Under the hardwoods, we may find striped wintergreen, and the parasitic squaw root, beech drops, and Indian pipes.

The park also has a heronry next to a large beaver pond, and if you bring binoculars, you may see the parent birds fly to and from their nests to feed their young. The pond attracts additional birds such as eagles, ospreys, and other raptors, as well as a variety of waterfowl. Among mammals, beavers, muskrats, deer, foxes and even otters have been observed. Amphibians abound. In the woods around the edges of the pond, you may see numerous returning migrant warblers, or hear the drumming of a pileated woodpecker.

This small forest is named in memory of a son of Charles E. Miller, Howard County politician and businessman. Don Miller was president of Miller Chevrolet and was interested in trees and other plants. One must get permission to visit this small stream valley.

It contains a diversity of species: spring beauty, fringe tree, blackhaw viburnum, arrowwood, mapleleaf viburnum, spicebush, oak, hickory, red maple, dogwood, black gum, ash, tulip tree, beech, wild geranium, false solomon's seal, bedstraw, jack-in-the-pulpit, mayapple, New York fern, sensitive fern, blackberry, black cohosh and sedges.

This is the eighth year that we will explore this area as we add to our survey of its flora and note changes over time.  Learn to identify plants with a botanist who can answer your questions.  The field trip will be facilitated by Charlie Davis and Heidi Pringle.  Charlie Davis is a professional field ecologist who specializes in plants.  Heidi has studied a little botany.

    Leader: Heidi Pringle

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Limited to 10. This field trip is for ages 12 and older.

    FREE

Notes:  A climb down a small, slippery, steep hill is necessary to enter the forest. There is also a stream crossing that requires a big step over the shallow stream. There are only animal trails, and participants are asked to be very careful not to step on the native plants. The leader has encountered only one tick, but tick populations change each year and there are many deer. Please take precautions for ticks. Wear long pants, since there is an area with poison ivy that must be crossed. There are muddy areas.

Bring:  hand lens, pad and pencil/pen, rain gear, boots

Cancellation Policy: In the event of heavy rain, the walk will be postponed.
